My ten-minute play LETTERS FROM THE MONA LISA was produced May 6-7 at Jewel Box Theatre in Poulsbo, Washington. Later I got this note from a patron who sought me out on Facebook:
“Hi there Dwayne. Just thought I’d let you know that i saw your Mona Lisa play at the Jewel Box over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Your piece and Gwen’s were stand-outs. Congratulations — I hope to see more of your work in the future!”

Sweet Briar College in Virginia put on a staged reading of 57 HOURS IN THE HOUSE OF CULTURE on March 19. We had a full house, including the college president! Here are some photos from the afternoon rehearsal.

My dark play about the Moscow theatre siege comes back to life on March 19 with a staged reading at Sweet Briar College in Virginia.
I would say it comes back to the stage, except this time it won’t be on a stage, it’ll be in an art gallery, where the backdrop is an exhibit on Soviet propaganda. Very fitting!

Feedback from staged reading of “Exiled To Texas”

I held a staged reading of my new comedy EXILED TO TEXAS on Saturday, March 12 at the Roanoke Children’s Theatre. It’s not a children’s script, that just happened to be the venue available, thanks to the generosity of artistic director Pat Wilhelms.
I do not have any photos — well, I have some but they’re pretty blurry. But I do have this happy feedback:

EXILED TO TEXAS
A teen-age Russian chess prodigy is sent, against her will, on an exchange trip to a small town in Texas, which hasn’t had a girl born there in the past twenty years. Svetlana is immediately drafted to serve as cheerleader for a football team that has never won a game. Meanwhile, her big sister back in Moscow runs an Internet scam for mail-order brides. East meets west, and comedy ensues. Cast: Six – five female, one male.

My ten-minute script CHEF PIERRE DOES NOT DO SIMPLE has been selected as one of the entries in this year’s one-act play festival at the Dover Little Theatre in Dover, New Jersey.
Performances are April 22-24.

A television producer explains to a TV chef that he need to simplify some of his language because many younger viewers do not understand them. He reacts badly and winds up creating a mess with broken eggs and flour. Cast: Four — One male, three non-gender. Running time: Ten minutes.

Two new staged readings in Indiana and California

I have two new staged readings to report.
The one-act JILL AND THE BEANSTALK had a reading at the Mitchell Community Public Library in Mitchell, Indiana on Feb. 25.
The five-minute piece LARRY’S LATEST PLAN TO GET OUT OF YARDWORK had a reading on Feb. 24 by Readers Theatre Repertory in Los Angeles.
JILL AND THE BEANSTALK
Jill’s science project results in a beanstalk through the school’s ceiling. Comedy and chaos ensue, along with a goose that lays golden eggs, a harp that plays itself and, perhaps, even a rumor of a giant. Cast: Seven — 3 male, 3 female, 1 non-gender. Running time: Twenty minutes.
I’m not sure which version of LARRY’S was done. Here’s a description of both:
LARRY’S LATEST PLAN TO GET OUT OF DOING YARDWORK, version 1
It’s spring, time to start mowing the yard, and Larry has cooked up a plan to get out of the chore. He’s bought some canaries, and plans to paint them to look like a rare species, which he’ll then release — in hopes the government will declare his backyard a protected habitat. Cast: Two males. Running time: Five minutes.
LARRY’S LATEST PLAN TO AVOID YARDWORK, version 2
A man decides to get out of the chore of mowing his yard by buying a herd of goats for the front yard. His wife confronts him and comedy ensues. Cast: Two — one male, one female. Running time: Five minutes.

“Piece of Cake” to have staged reading in Chicago

My short piece PIECE OF CAKE will have a staged reading in Chicago on March 19, as part of a whole show of short, wedding-related scripts.
The show “Cold Feet” is produced by Talif Productions and will be held at the Theatre Momentum Pendulum Space, 1803 West Byron, Suite 216, Chicago.
That’s a busy day for me: I’m have a staged reading in Virginia of my full-length script, 57 HOURS IN THE HOUSE OF CULTURE. I need a time-turner to make it to both places.
PIECE OF CAKE
A wedding cake gets mixed up with a cake where a scantily-clad woman pops out of the cake. Comedy ensues. Cast: Six, best as four female, two male, but could be three and three. Running time: Five minutes.

Got word this weekend that my ten-minute script LETTERS FROM THE MONA LISA will be produced May 7-8 at the Jewel Box Theatre in Poulsbo, Washington.
From the artistic director: “We received over 100 entries for our first festival from all over the United States and Canada and were very pleased, and entertained, by the responses. In fact, both of your submitted plays were in our top 20.”
Here’s the synopsis of the script. Not sure yet which ending they’re using:
LETTERS FROM THE MONA LISA
The woman in the famous painting comes to life and speaks to a security guard at the Louvre museum. He persuades her to write a letter to one of her fans. Cast: Two to four, depending on which ending you choose. The basic cast is 1 male, 1 female, with the male envisioned as older and the female capable of portraying the Mona Lisa. Some of the optional endings add 1 female and 1boy. Running time: 10 minutes.
