Photo from ‘Delicacies’ in Hamilton, Ontario

Emerson Arts in Hamilton, Ontario produced three short pieces of mine as part of their spooky October festival. Here’s a photo from one of them — ‘Delicacies.’ Don’t ask what she’s eating. That’s the punch line.

“The Recruiter” to be produced in Houston

Just got word that my five-minute play THE RECRUITER will be produced in Houston in the 2016 Five Minute Mile Play Festival at the Obsidian Theatre. The show dates are November 9-19.

THE RECRUITER
A scene about gender discrimination in college sports. A college recruiter shows up at a rural school asking about a particular football player; oblivious to the softball player banging home runs in batting practice. Cast: Two adult males, one teenage girl.

This is also one of the short scenes in PLAY BALL!, a full-length collection of short baseball scenes.

“Piece of Cake” to have staged reading in Chicago

My short piece PIECE OF CAKE will have a staged reading in Chicago on March 19, as part of a whole show of short, wedding-related scripts.

The show “Cold Feet” is produced by Talif Productions and will be held at the Theatre Momentum Pendulum Space, 1803 West Byron, Suite 216, Chicago.

That’s a busy day for me: I’m have a staged reading in Virginia of my full-length script, 57 HOURS IN THE HOUSE OF CULTURE. I need a time-turner to make it to both places.

PIECE OF CAKE

A wedding cake gets mixed up with a cake where a scantily-clad woman pops out of the cake. Comedy ensues. Cast: Six, best as four female, two male, but could be three and three. Running time: Five minutes.

* January 2: Staged reading of RHONDA’S HIGH-CLASS ROADKILL CHILI (full-length) at Showtimers, Roanoke, Virginia.
* January 28: MAC AND BETH (one-act), Cascade Christian Schools, Puyallup, Washington.

A rare shot of the playwright performing his own work. Photo by Heather Yvonne Brush

I don’t usually perform my own work. For one thing, I don’t claim to be an actor. But mostly, I want to see how my work, well, works — and it’s hard to do that when you’re doing it.

However, this month’s theme at the monthly readings at the Liminal gallery in Roanoke was “Anything Goes,” so why not.

Heather Yvonne Brush took this photo of me performing THE LONGEST HOME RUN EVER, one of my many short pieces about baseball.

THE LONGEST HOME RUN EVER
Based on actual science, the explanation of the longest home run possible. Cast: One, non-gender. Running time: Five minutes.

Video: “A Nice, Relaxing Cup of Tea” in Ontario walking tour festival

There’s a fascinating theatre festival each year in Kitchener, Ontario that I’d love to see — it’s a walking tour festival where audience members are led around downtown to various venues, and theatre occasionally breaks out.

While I haven’t been there, some of my work has been. In 2013, the Asphalt Jungle Shorts program included my piece “Requiem for a Buzzard” — you can find photos here from the June production and here from the September reprise.

Now the Asphalt Jungle Shorts folks have unearthed this video from the 2009 production of my short piece, “A Nice, Relaxing Cup of Tea.” Here, Nicholas Cumming and Emma Dines perform the piece at The Kava Bean, directed by Robin Bennett.

Video: “The Liberal Arts Pirates” at Gone in 60 Seconds Festival in U.K.

My short script “The Liberal Arts Pirates” was produced in June 2012 at the U.K. branch of the Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays.

The video took longer to get up, but here ’tis.

This script was also done this year as a radio play at Falcon Radio Theatre in Seattle.

It began its life as a staged reading at No Shame Theatre in Roanoke, Va.
