In June, I had two short pieces in the annual Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays in New York. It’s actually an international festival; I also had two pieces in the British leg of the festival in May. I’m still waiting on the video from that show, but the video from the New York festival has now been posted.

Fan mail from an actress in New York

For the first time, I’ve gotten fan mail! From an actress! In New York! I had several short pieces done in a festival there last month and today I got this note from one of them: “After seeing THE COW’S FAULT in the 2014 [festival], I HOPED to get cast in one of your plays and was THRILLED to be play Practical Mouse in AN UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY.”

She was referring to one of my entries in this year’s Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays; you can find a photo here.

Here’s a photo from AN UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY, which was produced June 11-13 in New York as part of the Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays.

This involves, as you can see, a dead mouse.

I had two scripts in the New York festival, plus three in the related youth festival, and two more in the British version of the festival. You can read about all those here.

Three more one-minute shows in a New York festival

I’ve got three one-minute pieces being produced in #NextGen, the youth version of the annual Gone in 60 Seconds festival of one-minute plays in New York.

Those pieces are: AN UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY (which is also being done in the adult version), THE FOUNTAIN OF TOO MUCH YOUTH, and THE LITTLE RED HEN THINKS BIG.

They’re being done June 12 at Brooklyn College.

AN UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY
Some mice found one of their fellows dead in a mousetrap. What to do, oh what to do? What else? Eat the cheese! Cast: Four, non-gender. Running time: One minute.

THE FOUNTAIN OF TOO MUCH YOUTH
An older couple drinks from the fountain of youth — but they drink too much, and of differing amounts, and so now she’s 16 and he’s 10. Cast: One teen-age girl, one pre-teen boy.

THE LITTLE RED HEN THINKS BIG
The Little Red Hen as a commodities broker. Cast: Three (one female, one male, one non-gender) or four (one female, two male, one non-gender.)

I have two pieces in the adult version — AN UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY and THERE ARE NO CELLPHONES IN SHAKESPEARE. So that makes five pieces in all in the New York leg of the festival. Plus I had two more done on the British side of the same festival: SLAM POETRY and THE ONLINE AFFAIR. So that makes seven!

Two one-minute plays to be produced in New York festival

Two of my one-minute plays will be produced in June at the U.S. version of the annual Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays. They will be June 11-13 at Brooklyn College in New York.

I also had two different pieces produced in the British edition of the same festival in early May. (See photos and video here.)

The two pieces in New York will be THERE ARE NO CELLPHONES IN SHAKESPEARE and THE UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY.

THERE ARE NO CELLPHONES IN SHAKESPEARE
A director does to an audience member with a cellphone what a lot of directors would surely like to do. Cast: Four, non-gender.


AN UNEXPECTED CHEESE PARTY

Video: Two of my one-minute plays in festival in Britain

Two of my short plays were performed at the British version of the Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays on May 5 in Leeds.

They were SLAM POETRY and THE ONLINE AFFAIR.

SLAM POETRY
Two guys misunderstood, and think a poetry slam is where you slam poets into the ground as in a wrestling match. Physical comedy ensues. Cast: Three — two males, one non-gender. Running time: One minute.

THE ONLINE AFFAIR
A man and a woman – either husband and wife, or boyfriend and girlfriend – are sitting near each other, each texting on their phones. Except each thinks they’re texting to a secret online lover, when, in fact, they’re unknowingly texting each other. Cast: Two – one male, one female – or four – two male, two female.

“Klaus” to have staged reading in New York City in December

My full-length script that imagines an origin story for Santa Claus — KLAUS — will have a staged reading in New York on December 2, exact venue and such still TBA.

This is through the auspices of Gi60 — the annual “Gone in 60 Seconds” Festival of one-minute plays that takes place each summer in New York, with a counterpart in Great Britain. I’ve been fortunate to have had my short work done there for several years. Now, the Gi60 folks are using their “off-season” to feature longer scripts by some of the Gi60 writers.

KLAUS: How it all began
Where did Santa Claus come from? There is no particular origin myth, until now. This story begins in the 1740s with an eccentric German professor of what we now call physics. He invents time travel, and when he becomes the target of the wrath of a mob who wants to burn him as a witch, he uses it to escape. Involves science fiction, treason against the king, a love story, and some cooking. Cast: Seven – six male, one female.

This will be the second staged reading for KLAUS. The first was in 2012 in Roanoke, Virginia, through Hollins University.

Seven scripts produced in New York festival!

gi60cover_small2I had thought I was having five scripts produced in the U.S. edition of Gone in 60 Seconds, a festival of one-minute plays — one in the regular portion, four in the teen portion.

Instead, it was seven! I discovered this when the program arrived in the mail this week. The other two were part of the festival’s retrospective of earlier work.

So I had four pieces done in the #NextGen part of the festival — BOLIVIA!, THE CALL OF THE OPEN ROAD, JIMMY’S PLAN FOR WORLD DOMINATION, and THREE TREES TALKING.

In the “adult” portion, there was IT’S THE COW’S FAULT, plus two that were reprised — DEEP INTO OCTOBER and THE GHOST LAMP. Details on the festival here. I also have video from the original productions of DEEP INTO OCTOBER and THE GHOST LAMP (plus video of the same script in the UK.)

Plus there were two scripts in the U.K. edition — THE CHICKEN CROSSES MADISON AVENUE and COUNTING WOLVES.

Four scripts in New York festival; two in British festival

gi60I got word today that not one, not two, not three but FOUR of my scripts have been accepted into the Gone in 60 Seconds #NextGen festival in New York in June. This is a festival of one-minute plays that will be performed by teens. It’s an outgrowth of the regular Gone in 60 Seconds Festival, where I’ve been a regular.

The “regular” festival is June 13-15 in New York and includes my play IT’S THE COW’S FAULT, discussed here.

The #NextGen portion is June 14-15.

Of the 26 scripts accepted into #NextGen festival, four are mine:

BOLIVIA!
A geopolitical lesson, delivered as a rant by a woman against a man who has committed some grievous sin. Cast: One female.

THE CALL OF THE OPEN ROAD
Two chickens discuss why they should cross the road. Both a long version and a one-minute version. Cast: Two, non-gender.

JIMMY’S PLAN FOR WORLD DOMINATION
Versions 1 and 2: A boy and his sister plot how to take over the world. Cast: Two — one male, one female. Running time: One minute.
Version 3: A classroom scene in which a teacher finds a student plotting how to take over the world. Cast: Two have speaking roles — one juvenile male, one female adult, then however many kids you need to fill out the scene. Running time: One minute.

THREE TREES TALKING
Three trees contemplate the question: If they were human, what kind of human would be they? Cast: Three, non-gender. Running time: One minute.
* This was previously produced in the 2013 British edition of the Gone in 60 Seconds Festival, along with two other scripts.

Speaking of the British edition, I also learned today I have two scripts there this year, as well.

They are:

THE CHICKEN CROSSES MADISON AVENUE
Guess which road the chicken crossed to get to the other side. Cast: One, non-gender. Running time: One minute.

COUNTING WOLVES
A person trying to get to sleep is counting sheep, when a wolf appears, dressed in sheep’s clothing. Cast: At least four – all non-gender.

That production will be June 5 in Halifax, U.K.

Scripts to be performed in New York and Scotland

I have good news to report:

* My one-minute play IT’S THE COW’S FAULT is among those included in this year’s “Gone in 60 Seconds Festival” of one-minute plays, to be produced June 13-15 in New York City. I’ve been thrilled to be part of this festival in the past and it’s great to be back for another year. Here are photos and video from last year’s entry, FISHING FOR MEN.Out of that, the festival producers created this short film version for a different competition. Also, last year I had three scripts in the festival’s UK version. Here are rehearsal photos from THIS IS THE CAPTAIN SPEAKING.

* Meanwhile, my 10-minute play SOMETIMES ELEPHANTS DIE STANDING UP will have be performed May 23 in Scotland by the Produced Moon company. (I’m a little uncertain whether it’s a staged reading or a full production; pretty sure it’s a staged reading. And I’m not sure whether it’s in Edinburgh or Glasgow; the company produces in both cities.) This will be my first performance of any sort in Scotland.

Here are the synopses:

IT’S THE COW’S FAULT
Three chickens and a cow watch a chicken cross the road. Bad things happen. Cast: Four, non-gender. Running time: One minute.

SOMETIMES ELEPHANTS DIE STANDING UP
Two lowly circus workers try to figure out what to do with an elephant dies. An absurdist look at how the economy works. Cast:  Two males. Running time: Ten minutes.
