Video: “The Sandstorm” in Chicago
Posted by Dwayne Yancey in News, Productions, Uncategorized, Video on September 16, 2015
Otherworld Theatre in Chicago produced my script THE SANDSTORM as part of the Paragon festival of science fiction plays on August 22. Here’s the video.
It was one of two of my scripts in the show; the other was THE BLACK MARKET OF MEMORIES.
THE SANDSTORM
A dark vision from the last days of Mars. A local official in charge of building canals instead diverts some of the money to build an underground library to store his civilization’s artifacts because he knows Mars is doomed. Cast: Two non-gender. Running time: Seven or eight minutes.

Short film “Kiss My Ashes Goodbye” wins another first place
Posted by Dwayne Yancey in News, Uncategorized, Video on June 1, 2015
The short film that Hank Ebert and I made — “Kiss My Ashes Goodbye” — won another prize in the Bike Shorts Film Festival. (Also should point out that Chris Shepard did the music soundtrack, which was surely key to its victory, as well).
In early May, we won the audience vote at the initial Roanoke showing. On Saturday, May 30, we also won the audience vote at the Blacksburg showing. That was something of a surprise, since neither of us were in attendance and we’d done nothing, literally, nothing, to drum up support there.
Another film won the audience prize at the Lynchburg showing, so that means we took two out of three!
The film stars Blair Peyton as the bike messenger, Chris Shepard as the bike messenger company chieftain, Marianne Ebert as the funeral home attendant, Stephen Glassbrenner as thief one, Hannah Whitt as the woman with car trouble, Lincoln Humphry as thief two, Martha Weeks Boswell as the woman who requested the delivery, and Maggie Bryant and Alden Bryant as the two children.
I also have these photos from the making of KISS MY ASHES GOODBYE.
And here’s a list of the other films that Hank and I have done: Read the rest of this entry »
Video: Two of my one-minute plays in festival in Britain
Posted by Dwayne Yancey in News, Productions, Uncategorized, Video on May 15, 2015
Two of my short plays were performed at the British version of the Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays on May 5 in Leeds.
They were SLAM POETRY and THE ONLINE AFFAIR.
SLAM POETRY
Two guys misunderstood, and think a poetry slam is where you slam poets into the ground as in a wrestling match. Physical comedy ensues. Cast: Three — two males, one non-gender. Running time: One minute.
THE ONLINE AFFAIR
A man and a woman – either husband and wife, or boyfriend and girlfriend – are sitting near each other, each texting on their phones. Except each thinks they’re texting to a secret online lover, when, in fact, they’re unknowingly texting each other. Cast: Two – one male, one female – or four – two male, two female.
Here’s the whole show. SLAM POETRY comes on at 7:26 and THE ONLINE AFFAIR is at 49:54.

Short film “Kiss My Ashes Goodbye” wins audience prize at Bike Shorts Film Festival
Posted by Dwayne Yancey in News, Uncategorized, Video on May 4, 2015
Each year for the past several years now, Salem filmmaker Hank Ebert and I have made a short film for the annual Bike Shorts Film Festival — short films about bicycles.
On Friday night, we won the audience vote at the Roanoke showing.
The 13 entries came from all over — some local to our corner of Virginia, but also some from Canada, Israel and Hong Kong. The judges picked one from Vancouver as their winner. The audience chose ours.
Here ’tis!
Next up: There are showings (and more audience votes) in Lynchburg on May 7 and Blacksburg on May 30. And there’s also a prize for the most number of You Tube views in May, so start watching!
I also have these photos from the making of KISS MY ASHES GOODBYE.

Photos from short film “Kiss My Ashes Goodbye”

Once again, filmmaker Hank Ebert and I have collaborated on a short film for the Bike Shorts film festival which is pretty much what you think it is — short films about bicycles. I’ll post the video once the festival happens on May 1, but here are some shots from the shoot:

British critic calls my work “absolutely fantastic” and “all-around brilliance”
Posted by Dwayne Yancey in News, Photos, Productions, Reviews, Uncategorized, Video on July 24, 2014
The Congleton Players in Congleton, England produced my short one-act REVENGE IS SWEET WITH A SLIGHT AFTERTASTE OF IRONY on July 18. It was one of five scripts out of 211 submitted to make the cut for the group’s annual festival.
If that’s not honor enough, theatre critic D.C. Wood had exceptionally kind words to say about my work. You can hear them for yourself in this video — they start at the 6:47 mark. You can also see photos from my show, and others.
Among the things the critic had to say:
* “This was all-around brilliance.”
* “Absolutely fantastic.”
* “Dwayne Yancey wrote a genuinely witty and sharp script.”
He ranked my show one of his two favorites — “it was so close, it could have gone either way” — and said he loved it so much “I personally don’t have any criticism of this play.”
In the end, the audience vote for best in show went to yet a different script. (Details on that about the 15-minute mark.)
Here’s the synopsis of the script:
REVENGE IS SWEET WITH A SLIGHT AFTERTASTE OF IRONY
A famous food critic visits a restaurant. The manager wants desperately to please him; the chef wants revenge. Dark comedy and slapstick ensues. Cast: Six — four male, two female. Running time: Fifteen minutes.
Thanks, Congleton!

“Unwanted” takes second place at Waynesboro Film Festival

The short film “Unwanted” that Hank Ebert and I put together for the Bike Shorts Festival recently took second place in the audience vote at the Waynesboro Film Festival in Waynesboro, Virginia.
We also took second at the audience vote at the bike festival, too. We are the kings of second place!

Just about every year, Salem filmmaker Hank Ebert and I collaborate on a short film. The past two years, it’s been an entry in the local edition of the Bike Shorts Film Festival — short films about bicycles.
This year’s entry was “Unwanted.”
The cast includes Kelly Anglim, Charlie Boswell, Martha Boswell, Noah Jones, Nancy Lawrence, Gary Reid, Blair Peyton, Chad Snyder, Ana Uotinen, Lauren Uotinen and Katerina Yancey. Here’s the result.
We didn’t win the judges’ prize; that went to a wonderful documentary that a London-based filmmaker made about bicycles in Cuba. Hard to beat that! We didn’t win the audience vote in Roanoke, either. That went to a film that was 17 minutes long (even though the rules said 10 minutes). But I’m told we did come in second.
Here are some still photos from the filming, which was done in March.
If you’d like to check out our previous efforts, they’re here:
In the past, we’ve done:
* “My Kid Could Paint That” for a festival at the Grandin Theatre in 2009
* “Back to the Future” for a Sweded film festival in the 2012 Marginal Arts Festival.
* “The Secret Lives of Goldfish” for the 2013 Bike Shorts Festival (behind-the-scenes photos here.)

I’m a stage guy, not a film guy. But once a year, Salem filmmaker Hank Ebert and I wind up collaborating on a short film for various local competitions.
This year, Hank and I once again have teamed up to produce a short film for the Bike Shorts Festival, which, as the name implies, is seeking short films about bicycles.
Since the entry deadline hasn’t passed yet, and the film showing isn’t until early May, I won’t give away TOO many details, but below are some photos from our two film shoots on March 1 and March 8. You can find the entire set here.

The February reading at the Liminal gallery in Roanoke dealt with “intersections.”
For me, that meant my short piece, “A Spork in the Road.”
