Poster for “Sweets to the Sweet” in Chicago

Here’s the post that the Gorilla Tango Theatre in Skokie, Illinois (Chicago ‘burbs!) is using for my show “Sweets to the Sweet.” This is a modern version of Hamlet, with a gender-reversed cast — so Hamlet becomes Hamlette, Ophelia becomes Phil and so forth.

Alas, in converting this from a pdf to a jpeg, the photo lost a lot of quality. I assure you the original is quite spectacular, with a woman’s pensive eyes looking out . . . presumably Hamlette herself.

Here’s a link to the PDF to see the better version . . .

In June, my short (and dark) piece “Fishing For Men” was performed in the annual Gone in 60 Seconds Festival of one-minute plays in New York. (You can find performance photos here.)

Producer Rose Bonczek asked if it would be OK if she had the piece turned into a short film to enter in the MSN/New York Television Festival Short Form Storytellers Challenge.

Naturally, I said “yes.”

Here’s the result. Well, sort of. I haven’t seen the actual video yet, but Rose shares these photos from the shooting: Read the rest of this entry »

Guest responder at Hollins Playwrights Festival

The poster.

The poster.

I was a guest responder this year for the annual Playwrights Festival that’s part of the Hollins University MFA playwriting program.

Ten new plays had staged readings over three days and nights; I was able to make four of them and, I hope, offered some constructive feedback. Each one I saw was wonderful in its own way and I hope to see each one produced someday.

* “Independence Day at Happy Meadows,” by Laura King, was a hilarious farce about four women breaking out of a nursing home.
* “Swelter,” by Chad Runyon, was a dark, thought-provoking play about a mother whose 3-year-old son was left in a car on a hot day and died.
* “Decision Height,” by Meredith Dayna Levy, was a wonderful historical play about female pilots during World War II.
* “The Brooklyn Bridge,” by Will Coleman, was a very touching — and contemporary — romantic comedy.

Chad took this very nice picture of me: Read the rest of this entry »

My one-act “Follow the Money” took first place (in an audience vote) in the New Voice Play Festival at the Old Opera House Theatre in Charles Town, W.Va. in June.

Here’s the certificate to prove it.

Newspaper coverage of my one-act “Follow The Money”

My one-act about a kid who kidnaps the tooth fairy to find out where the money comes from — “Follow the Money: A Modern-Day Fairy Tale” — took first place in the New Voice Play Festival in Charles Town, West Virginia. (More on that here.)

The entire festival got nice press coverage from the local daily newspaper, the Journal in Martinsburg.

When I was in Charles Town for the festival, I saw some copies lying around but they were no longer available on the newsstand, so I ordered some — and here they are.

You’ll see it was a photo from my play that graced the cover of the paper’s weekly entertainment tab (above.)

And below is the two-page spread (a doubletruck, in newspaper language) on the festival: Read the rest of this entry »

My one-act “Follow the Money: A Modern-Day Fairy Tale” won first place on June 23 in the 13th annual New Voice Play Festival at the Old Opera House Theatre in Charles Town, West Virginia.

Four scripts out of 85 were chosen for production; then the audience voted each night on their favorites, with the winner announced after Sunday’s finale.

Here’s some information on the script and how it came to be entered in the festival here.

The Journal, the daily newspaper in Martinsburg, W.Va., made the festival the cover story of its weekly entertainment section.

The Barefoot Theatre Company in New York held a staged reading of my full-length script “The Ballad of Alejandro Lopez” on June 17, 2013 at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre in Manhattan. (Historic because it’s a stage where Edward Albee and Sam Shepard have also had some of their works debut.)

Two of my short pieces were produced in June in the annual “Asphalt Jungle Shorts Festival” in Kitchener, Ontario. This is a walking-tour theatre, where patrons buy a ticket and are led around downtown, where they encounter theatre popping up at various places. (More details on the festival here and descriptions of each piece here.)

My two pieces were “Pandora and Shrodinger: What’s in the Box?” and “Requiem for a Buzzard.”
